I agree with what you said at the end there. If someone had told me in my younger years “you ARE a Christian, you ARE forgiven, you ARE saved. Now believe this”, had I understood that God’s grace was a free gift, I believe I never would have drifted away from church in my teenage years. Instead, sadly, too many of us are told “once you REALLY believe and REALLY commit, then you will be REALLY be a Christian”. By this, we are already defeated, and taking the easy road of following the ways of the world becomes all the more tempting. Such a subtle difference in the way we speak about faith can be the difference between a person remaining in church, or falling away.
